Maurice Crescenzi

A former chief ethics and compliance officer, Maurice currently leads Grant Thornton LLP’s ethics and compliance practice. Leveraging more than 25 years of professional, industry, and big four experience, Maurice works with c-suite executives and compliance professionals across industries, helping them design, implement, and evaluate their governance structures, compliance programs, and enterprise risk-management and third-party risk management strategies.

As a practitioner, Maurice has held leadership compliance and ethics positions in leading, global companies, such as the Fortune 10 Altria family of companies (then composed of Philip Morris, Kraft Foods, Miller Brewing, and other operating companies) and Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals. Maurice also served as the Global Compliance and Ethics Officer for DeVry Inc.

During his tenure as an industry ethics and compliance officer, Maurice earned a reputation for driving compliance at a strategic level, aligning compliance within the broader contexts of sustainability and corporate responsibility, while right-sizing compliance initiatives to fit within an organization’s culture. On a day-to-day basis, Maurice served as a trusted advisor to business partners and worked successfully across functions, business units, and geographies to gain consensus, advance initiatives through influence, and inspire team members. And having worked side-by-side with colleagues on the ground in more than 35 countries, Maurice understands first-hand the importance of cross-cultural partnering, as well as the challenges associated with implementing a global compliance program at a local level.

Maurice holds an advanced degree in governance and compliance and teaches self-designed, graduate-level courses addressing the inter-related topics of corporate responsibility, governance, compliance, ethics, and organizational culture. He is also a member of several compliance organizations.
